Talking began as an artistic research project during the 2013 session of the School for Poetic Computation in Brooklyn, New York. We were exploring ideas around perception and communication, and thinking about what it means to place these processes into machines. Using computer vision techniques, it was possible for us to prototype our ideas, which lead to interesting results and further exploration.
This is not a project with a single end goal; there are many potential strands, only a handful of which we have so far followed. We aim to create environments through which viewers can gain a deeper understanding of the ways we as humans perceive and interact. At the same time, we hope to further a conversation about how humans develop technology, and how this development can lead to new awareness about ourselves; the creative act of building 'perception' into machines gives us insight into our own perceptual mechanisms, in turn feeding back into the creative process.
